Glynneath v Tondu

After the fantastic results Glynneath achieved in the post-Christmas period against top teams in both the League and WRU Plate, today’s game against bottom team Tondu could have been a potential “banana skin”, however Glynneath achieved a win on a cold, and gloomy afternoon at AbernantPark, with a below par performance.

Glynneath started brightly, and from a dominant scrum were awarded a penalty, which Dylan Francis duly slotted into touch on the Tondu 10m line. From the lineout Glynneath secured good ball, and drove forward with prop Keelan Marney going over for an unconverted try.

The home team were showing total control at the scrum, and Dylan Francis found a good touch from another scrum infringement by Tondu, unfortunately Glynneath failed to capitalise by going over the top in the ensuing lineout. Tondugradually came more into the game, and midway through the half, a break by their captain second row Hywel Davies saw the ball moved wide for centre Sam Grabham to score a try, which was converted by fullback James Leppard.

From the restart Glynneath secured the ball, and moved up field with a move combining backs and forwards, which culminated in James Parry going over for an unconverted try from close range.

The second half again started brightly for the home team, and from a piece of intelligent play by Rhodri Jones, taking a quick lineout to Jordan Griffiths, who raced through a disorganised Tondu defence to score under the posts allowing Dylan Francis an easy conversion.

Play continued mainly between the 25m areas, again with Glynneath being dominant in scrum and open play until passive scrums were called by Tondu as they played out the last quarter of the match with only 14 players on the pitch.

Tondu were competing throughout the match, and their performance did not reflect their league position.

Glynneath were penalised for not being 10m at a penalty, and Tondu chose to kick for goal in an attempt to secure a losing bonus point, James Leppard duly converted.

Glynneath closed out the match with a well taken penalty by Dylan Francis to make the final score 20 – 10 to the home side.
