Glynneath rewarded for a superb campaign last season opened their Championship season against highly fancied Tata Steel, and they more than held their own and went close to winning the game. Tata were having the better at scrum time but Glynneath had the edge in the lineouts .After Steve Lewis pulled a penalty wide for the visitors , Glynneath were dealt a harsh blow when they lost a player to the bin , a disputable decision. Steve Lewis made no mistake to put his side in front from the resulting penalty. Jack O'Reilly put his side level with a penalty of his own. Just before the break the Glynneath laid seige to the Tata line and felt that the visitors should have seen a card when they conceded a few penalties in the red zone. The second half saw Glynneath enjoy more of the game but the Tata defence was superb. A Steve Lewis penalty put the visitors back in front but up popped Jack O'Reilly to fire over another penalty. Glynneath suffered a second yellow card much to the dismay of players and supporters, feeling that they were hard done by and a Gareth Williams penalty sealed the game for Tata, a game where Glynneath played twenty minutes a man down.
