Glynneath v Birchgrove

Glynneath looking for the double over the visitors, having won the corresponding fixture only last week were under the cosh for the opening ten minutes as Birchgrove were not afraid to move the ball through hands but it was Glynneath who looked as if they were going to open the scoring when a great move down the touch line saw fullback Jordan Griffiths stopped just yards from the line. Birchgrove were quicker at cleaning out at the breakdown and some more visitors pressure saw them gather loose ball and run back at Glynneath and a snap drop goal by Birchgroves Sean Hamer sailed just wide of the upright. From the drop out a mistake by Glynneath saw their opponents take advantage and not panicking saw some well timed passing put prop John Mapstone over in the corner.Jack O’Reilly who’s superb kicking display last week fired over a penalty for his side but this was cancelled out by a kick of his own by Birchgroves Steff Castle.Again Birchgrove took advantage of loose play and a drive to the Glynneath line saw the home side awarded a penalty enabling them to clear their lines and happy to change around with just a five point deficit .O’Reilly kicked a second penalty and after the visitors had conceded numerous penalties resulting in a warning the referee lost patience and dealt Birchgrove a yellow card .Jack O’Reilly struck his third penalty of the game after some indiscipline again costing the visitors.Glynneath could have put more pressure on their opponents than what they did but three penalties failed to find touch allowing the ever grateful talented back line of Birchgrove to run back at them.As it was last week Glynneath carried on their dominance at scrum time and one such massive drive saw yet another penalty award .A high kick out of defence by Glynneath looked a simple gather by the visitors fullback Sean Hamer who had been influential throughout the game saw him slip and Glynneaths young flanker Luke Weaver pounce to get the touchdown,O’Reilly firing over the conversion. It looked as if the game was over but again the visitors came back and after a series of driving mauls near the Glynneath line failure to cross ,saw them patiently wait their chance and we’re rewarded when Adam Percival power over and with Steff Castle converting it to set up a nail biting finish yet again but with Glynneath holding on they could count themselves lucky to get out of jail.
