Glynneath fell to a first league defeat in a pulsating encounter at Abernant Park against Ammanford RFC. Whilst the video reviews will not make pleasant viewing for the defence coaches, both teams are renowned for playing expansive rugby and there was great entertainment on offer in a ding-dong first half with Glynneath taking an early lead with well worked trys for Jed O’Reilly and Sam Harris only for a powerful Ammanford side to work their way back in to the game to lead 14-17 midway through the first half. Just before half-time Glynneath regained the lead with a try from Craig Tennant and went in at half-time 19-17 ahead. Early in the second half a try from Josh Bowen put Glynneath 26-17 ahead and at last there was some “daylight” between the teams on the scoreboard. However, instead of wilting, Ammanford regrouped and a powerful backlash resulted in them crossing the line for 3 trys in quick succession taking the score to 26-38. Another well worked try for Glynneath saw Sam Hawkins go over to reduce the deficit to 33-38 only for Ammanford to score late on to snuff out the chance of another bonus point. Great entertainment and credit to Ammanford for showing great resilience under pressure. Credit also to Glynneath for continuing to perform well in such a demanding league with Craig Tennant yet again outstanding with a deserved Man of the Match performance.
