Glynneath ended the season in true style with a 36 nil result against one of the best teams in the league. The bonus point win gave us a 8 point lead in the league to our closest contenders for the Ospreys OA title and a chance to prove ourselves in the national league champions cup against Penallta. Alas our joy of being league champions was to be cruelly cut short by a hastily arranged WRU extraordinary meeting that had been called to hear Aberavon Quins’ complaint that they had claim to the title due to the fact they had only played 15 of their 22 league fixtures, all cancelled games due to other teams refusing to play them. The meeting upheld the Quins’ complaint and subsequently awarded them the title even though the league rules clearly states that a team must complete 80% of the planned league fixtures before such a complaint could be considered!!!!!!!!
It’s been a fantastic season for our young team and now we must remember the positives of a truly successful season in which the boys competed in 26 competitive fixtures with pride and dignity. Next seasons bodes well for the team with the loss of only two third year players and the addition of several quality under 16 players, some of which have successfully had a taste of youth rugby this season.
